What genetic information do they carry?
Exosomes have been found to carry internal cargo representative of their cell of origin, such as membrane and cytoplasmic protiens, mRNA and miRs. (Valadi et al., 2008 Exosome-mediated transfer of mRNA and microRNA is a novel mechanism of genetic exchange; Taylor et al., 2008 MicroRNA signatures of tumor-derived exosomes as diagnostic biomarkers of ovarian cancer; Al-Nedawi et al., 2008 Intercellular transfer of the oncogenic receptor EGFRvIII by microvesicles derived from tumour cells
). Research also indicates, however, that exosomes, including tumor-derived exosomes, express unique molecular content and antigens that reflects their originating tumor cell. (Koga et al., 2005 Purification, characterization and biological significance of tumor-derived exosomes; Runz et al., 2007 Malignant ascites-derived exosomes of ovarian carcinoma patients contain CD24 and EpCAM).
